Holistic Psychotherapy Services

What is Woman-of-Color Focused Counseling?

Woman-of-Color focused Counseling takes into account the whole woman, cultural/racial trauma and gender based issues. Women, and women of color specifically, are carrying around traumas from generations of oppression, gender and racial discrimination and daily microaggressions and threats to their bodies and livelihoods. This constant barrage of threats, physical or emotional assaults and lack of safety creates much tension and stress in the body.  The body never forgets what the mind and emotions experience, and vice versa.  Women of color need support and care. At Mind Your Breath Counseling, we provide specialized therapy services.

What is Restorative Yoga and/or body based therapies?

In a restorative yoga practice, the focus is not on stretching or strengthening but on releasing. We release tension in the muscles and gently stimulate the organs through long-held poses designed to support and comfort. To achieve comfort a variety of props such as blankets, blocks, bolsters, sandbags, and eye pillows may be used.

Restorative yoga allows us to relearn the art of relaxation while developing the skills and abilities to self-soothe. It enhances our healing capacity through helping us regulate the stress response and re-balance the nervous system.

Body-based therapies involve incorporating movement, touch, breathwork and mindfulness in order to explore emotions, experiences and thoughts.

What Can I Expect From a Virtual Session?

Online sessions are held from the safety of your own home at a time that is convenient for you through video conference via Zoom.  All sessions will be secure and confidential.  During our sessions, we will explore experiences, feelings, and thoughts.  Depending on your level of comfort, I will incorporate body-based exercises and techniques into our talk therapy session. These could include bringing attention to your breath, exploring your body’s contact with the surfaces you’re sitting or laying upon, standing up and engaging in gentle physical movements, and/or placing your hands on your chest, belly, or other areas of your body. I also offer group Restorative Yoga Classes on Saturdays and Sundays that start Nov 7, 2020 via Zoom. Please schedule a Free Consultation to meet me and determine if we are a good fit.

Do I Take Insurance?

I am now accepting the following insurance plans: Aetna, Optum, Oscar Health, Oxford and United Healthcare. I also offer a sliding scale fee for self-pay clients. I can, also, accept payments using a health savings account (HSA) card or flexible spending account (FSA) card and I’m happy to provide receipts for these accounts.

Who Can Participate in Virtual Sessions?

Any woman age 18 or older currently living in the U.S., Caribbean, or Internationally.  I will also hold the space for non BIWOC (Black, Indigenous, Women of Color) within a therapeutic relationship if it is a good fit.
